Tennis Report 2022/23

Tennis at Newlands is thriving and we have coaching, competitions, events and social play running 12 months of the year.

Newlands has so much activity going on and player and team successes that it would be a very lengthy report if they were all mentioned individually, and it is always the case that I would unintentionally miss something out. We would encourage all members to sign up to our social media accounts as we use these to communicate all our team and player successes and tennis news.

We also have member Whatsapp group that is a great way to communicate, arrange matches and find out information. Please contact reception or one of our coaches to be added.

Box Leagues

Our box leagues continue to go from strength to strength thanks to Tracy Edward who runs them, and all our members who participate. We have over 70 participants in singles and 80 in the doubles leagues. 2022 saw the introduction of box league finals and various social events. The box leagues are also now online which means scores are recorded for World Tennis Number. Whether you are a new or long standing member, and regardless of ability, box leagues are a great way to meet people and find your level of competitive play. To sign up contact reception.

League and Cup Tennis

We entered approx. 80 teams into various Leagues and Competitions. This increased again from previous years and allows as many of our mini, junior and adult members as possible the opportunity to represent the club. Across these teams more than 400 members participated.

Our team practices have started in preparation for the 2023 season. If you would like to participate in our club teams, either mini, junior or senior please get in touch or come down to a practice session. If you are unsure which to attend please ask a club coach.

County, National and GB Selection

Well done to all who are selected for county and national training programmes and to represent the West of Scotland, Scotland or Great Britain throughout the year.

Team Captains and volunteers

We would again like to thank all of the members who get involved with running one (or more) of our club teams – both junior and senior. This is hugely appreciated and the teams would not be able to function without this support.

Competitions

We have many players that compete regularly in local and national competitions and events, with too many successes to mention all of them. To keep up to date with our club and player successes throughout the year please keep an eye out on the club’s social media.
The club continues to play host to many events throughout the year. Hosting and running our own competitions and events is an important part of tennis at Newlands and keeps our club and players at the forefront of tennis in Scotland. In 2022 we hosted the Scottish Cup Finals which was a huge success with our Men’s and Women’s teams winning AGAIN on home turf. 2023 is the last of our 3 year agreement to host this event so hopefully this success can continue.

Tennis Coaching

SteelTennis and their team of coaches continue to provide a comprehensive programme with hopefully something for everyone to participate in and enjoy. The programme continues to grow and we have over 200 adults and 350 juniors regularly taking part in coaching classes or lessons. We have a provision of free classes for all ages and abilities and coaches available to provide practice hits or private lessons. In January Steel Tennis launched a new App for all bookings and payments which has been a great success.

2022 Tennis Committee

Elizabeth Stevenson – Tennis Convenor, LTA Main Club Contact and LTA Welfare Officer
Calum McKnight
Steve Brown

Tracy Edward
Alex Kyle

If you would be interested in helping with Tennis at the club and sit on our tennis sub committee please contact Elizabeth or reception.

LTA Welfare Officer

The Welfare Officer is responsible for promoting safeguarding within their venue and working with others to ensure a safe and inclusive environment. Elizabeth Stevenson carries out this role at Newlands LTC. In 2022 Newlands LTC passed a comprehensive safeguarding Audit carried out by Tennis Scotland. More information can be found on the club notice board.

TENNIS CLUB CHAMPIONS 2022

The Club Championships in 2022 was ran over a longer period with finals played later in the year. This was to accommodate the ever growing entry and avoid too much pressure on the courts as everyone tries to play their ties (Over 200 entries and 300 matches played!). We will review the timelines in 2023 as I think preference would be to keep finals outdoors.
