Squash / Racketball finals day report

It was a fantastic finals day at the club yesterday.

Congratulations to all of our players for competing so strongly in the finals throughout the day.

Many thanks to everyone who entered, and thanks to Craig, David, and Robin for organising the excellent BBQ! Thanks also to everyone who stepped up to referee matches on the day.

The centrepiece open event final was a feast of some excellent attacking, fast paced squash between Fraser McCann and Matt Bedwell. Matt won a tight first, which seemed like a potentially pivotal turning point. However, Fraser rallied round in the second, although this was another tight one with both players having the chance to clinch the game. Fraser took it home 13-11. In the third, Fraser seized the chance to capitalize on the momentum swing with some fine work down the backhand side and a number of backhand drops found the nick, which even Matt couldn't retrieve. 2-1 to Fraser.
As expected, Matt came storming back, and Fraser didn't have the best of starts with some uncharacteristically loose play. 11-7 to Matt, and the match was going to a final game. Fraser came out all guns blazing and took a 6-1 lead, but the match swung again, and Matt clawed it back to 6-all then 8-all. Fraser upped the ante and more tight backhand play saw him serve for the title at 10-8. Another backhand drop clung to the wall and Matt tried to return deep, but the ball came out and the resulting stroke gave Fraser the title.

In the ladies event, Amanda Bruce just managed to edge Lindsay Ackers in a tight first, with both ladies having points to go 1-up. The game advantage seemed to swing the match in Amanda's favour, and she played some solid squash, lifting the ball when in trouble, and putting in some really tight forehand drops on multiple occasions. Amanda just managed to keep her nose in front but in truth, the match felt a bit tighter than the eventual 3-0 scoreline. Well done to both ladies for showing so much skill and determination on the day.

In the Racketball final, Dave Fallis (after a draining 3-2 win in the O40s squash final) took a 2 game lead against Matt Bedwell (who was playing this match ahead of his squash final). Matt appeared to be going for shots a little early in the rallies versus a very solid Dave, who took advantage of the openings. But Matt held in well and displayed some quality racketball to get his name on the club wall with an eventual 3-2 win.

Special mention to "Iron Man" Matt Carrigan who competed in 4 finals, winning 3 of them. A massive effort which would be way beyond most of us mere mortals! Matt even had time to watch his granddaughters Emily and Sophie compete in the U13s!
