Tennis
In 2021 we entered a total of 80 teams into Leagues and Competitions. This increased again from previous years and allows as many of our junior and adult members as possible the opportunity to represent the club. Across these teams more than 400 members participated.
The start of the 2021 season had a few disruptions due to covid restrictions but on the whole normality resumed.
Newlands have so many teams and players competing every week that it would be a very lengthy report if they were all mentioned individually, and it is always the case that I would unintentionally miss something out. Some highlights are below and also links to the 2021 leagues where you can see all the team scores and player statistics.
We would encourage all members to sign up to our social media accounts as we use these to communicate all our team and player successes and tennis news.
We also have member Whatsapp groups that are a great way to communicate, arrange matches and find out information. Please contact reception or one of our coaches to be added.

We have many players selected to represent their county in training programmes and county competitions. Well done to all who are selected and represent their Club and County throughout the year.
Team Captains and volunteers
We would again like to thank all of the members who get involved with running one (or more) of our club teams – both junior and senior. This is hugely appreciated and the teams would not be able to function without this support.
Competitions
We have many players that compete regularly in local and national competitions and events, with too many successes to mention all of them. To keep up to date with our club and player successes throughout the year please keep an eye out on the club’s social media.
The club continues to play host to many events throughout the year. Hosting and running our own competitions and events is an important part of tennis at Newlands and keeps our club and players at the forefront of tennis in Scotland. In 2021 we hosted the Scottish Cup Finals which was a huge success with our Men’s and Women’s teams winning on home turf. We estimated over 300 spectators on the day and over £1000 was raised for Alzheimer’s Scotland. The Finals will return to Newlands in June 2022 and we hope to build on last year’s success and retain our titles again.
Newlands are one of the only clubs in Scotland to host regular disability events. We are a favoured venues for these competitions and a group of club volunteers helps make them a success.
Tennis Coaching
Our coaching team had another successful year. Jennifer and Caitlin continue to provide a comprehensive programme with hopefully something for everyone to participate in and enjoy. The programme continues to grow and we have over 200 adults and 350 junior regularly taking part in coaching classes or lessons.
Mark Malcolm joined the team full time in January. Emma has just returned from maternity leave after welcoming baby April back in November. We have supported several of our juniors through their Level 1, 2 and 3 coaching qualifications in 2021. Many young people are involved on a voluntary basis either for their Duke of Edinburgh or for work experience.
The club have run several coaching initiatives over the year including the LTA Youth Tour programme which offers subsidised coaching for people in the local community.
We have expanded our links with local schools and have several lunch time and after school clubs.
Box Leagues
Our club box leagues continue to go from strength to strength and are a great way to provide activity and competition for all standards of players all year round. They are competitive, sociable and fun and are a great way to meet people.
We now have 60 players regularly competing in the Singles Leagues and 66 in the Doubles League. We had around 30 Juniors.
Thank you to Tracy Edwards who manages the adult leagues and has helped grow this into a huge success.
Facilities
The club have been busy in the last year improving the tennis facilities that will allow more playing opportunities for members.
Our 7 outdoor courts were fully rejuvenated in the winter of 2020/21. This improved the playing surface and should keep the playing surface to a good standard until they are resurfaced.
We put floodlights on courts 5,6 and 7.
Our Mini Tennis Courts were resurfaced.
I’d like to take this chance to thank Richard and his team of volunteers who work year round to ensure the courts and grounds are in great condition.

TENNIS CLUB CHAMPIONS 2021
After a year with no competition in 2020 we wanted the Club Championships in 2021 to be bigger and better than before. We added in some extra events and age groups including plate competitions for the draws with large entries. We had a bigger entry than before and a huge amount of matches were played. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side for the finals day and play was moved indoors. It did not stop us enjoying the matches or the BBQ! Thank you to all the people who donated new trophies.
