EGM on Thursday 13th January at 7pm via Zoom

The motion at the EGM is:

"The Club will construct 2 Padel tennis courts complete with roof and lights at a cost of £300,310. This is inclusive of irrecoverable VAT. This will not take place until appropriate funding is in place."

The reason for this meeting at this time is to try and bring forward the start of the project as due to COVID and many other reasons this project has been delayed by many months and we would like to begin construction in April to June 2022.

At present we have planning permission (which took eight months!) and have been awarded one grant and are awaiting a decision on a second one which is due by 31 January 2022. The Club is in the process of applying for an interest free loan from the Lawn Tennis Association via its Loan Scheme for Capital Projects. At present, the Club has an outstanding interest free loan balance of £31,500 with the Lawn Tennis Association. The proposed additional loan is £196,000 which together with the existing loan amounts to £227,500 and will be repayable in fourteen half-yearly instalments.

You can look up the drawings for the project by going to online planning - Glasgow City Council - look at new applications, click status all and then key in Mochrum Road.

Please note we will retain the present 72 spaces in the car park.

You will note that we also have planning permission to bring forward the front of the Clubhouse in alignment with the Padel courts. At this point in time, we do not intend to utilise this permission.

We wish to draw your attention to the fact that we have a very experienced Padel committee - Alan Pearson, Douglas Cumine, Paul McGettrick, Alex Kyle and Craig Andrew.

Alan and Douglas have over 30 years of experience of Newlands capital projects and were involved in the construction of the squash hall (£750,000), indoor tennis hall (£1.7m) and the rehabilitation of the flooded indoor tennis courts (£600,000). We have 3 chartered accountants, Alex who is a retired business owner and Craig who is regional sales director for UK and Northern Ireland at Oracle. We have also involved Shirley Pearson (President - whose idea it was to put the courts in the car park - well done Shirley!) and Aileen Miller the Reception Manager.

The professional team we have used are -

Peter Gordon - Chartered Surveyor, Director of Game 4 Padel, owner of Advantage Sports Consultancy and owner of Thistle Padel Courts. He also has experience with the LTA and Sport Scotland and the management of many Padel projects.

Gordon Gibb - Architect. Gordon runs Gibb Architects, is an expert witness at the court of session and lectures at a number of universities. He was the architect for the indoor tennis courts so has extensive knowledge of the Newlands site.

We also wish to pay tribute to the late Stuart McCaffer who funded the original surveys to allow the Club to investigate the viability of the project.

The plan therefore is to have a Zoom meeting on Thursday 13th January at 7pm (details of how to register to follow). All members are invited to attend but only Full, Life and Student members are allowed to vote. A quorum of 30 is required online.

In order to speed up the meeting we would welcome questions in advance by email to be received by Tuesday 11th January . We will publish questions and answers prior to the meeting to avoid any duplications. We will also take questions at the meeting.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting and getting this exciting new venture on the go!

Kind Regards,

Alan Pearson

Secretary
