Bill Barr
It is with much sadness that we announce the death of Bill Barr after a short illness. Bill joined Newlands over 30 years ago from the John Wright Squash Club in East Kilbride where he had been a founding member and served on the committee for many years. He played for a short time in our squash mini leagues and then took up tennis which he played regularly until just a few weeks ago when he took ill.
Bill would have been 89 in October, a remarkable achievement in playing sport until that age. Bill and his friend Wallace were always front and centre at the AGMs and he had a keen interest in the development of the club. He was a popular player and a very knowledgeable man. He could talk about almost anything, from history to science to politics to languages. His tennis partners will remember him especially for his winning mishits! He will be missed by many members of the club and our thoughts are with his family at this time. Funeral details to follow.
