End of Year Update

It’s been another busy year at the Club and in spite of the pandemic we are still continuing to thrive and develop. Many thanks to our army of volunteers who help keep the Club running smoothly and give up their time and expertise so willingly. Without these members the Club could not function in the manner and model that it does.

The Clubhouse has had new roofing, new WiFi and phone systems installed, the gents toilets upstairs have been revamped and we have reconfigured rooms downstairs to allow more office space for reception as well as providing a new space to rent out and provide income for the Club. This work caused a major upheaval in the Club (due to the damage caused by a flood in the upstairs gents) so many thanks to all involved especially Gordon Kent in sorting out the problem. The result was well worth the effort.

Also thanks to Tom Culshaw for all his work around the Club and to Ruairidh MacLean for his assistance in sorting our TV issues!

The Squash/Racketball hall received a well needed makeover and now looks more modern and user friendly. The courts have still to be attended to but this is in hand. It has been difficult to get contractors to quote never mind carry out the work but hopefully this will be resolved shortly.

It’s great to see squash and racketball back at the Club and our new coach Matt Bedwell is already proving to be successful in revitalising the sports. Thanks to Kieran O’Neill, Alan Susskind and the squash/racketball committee for all their hard work as well as Mark Ford and Fraser McCann who kept the coaching going until a new coach was appointed.

Our tennis season has gone from strength to strength this year and thanks to Elizabeth and her tennis committee for all their contributions towards this. Our Gents and Ladies first teams won their respective premier division titles and then went on to retain both the Ladies & Gents Scottish Cup! The finals were held at the Club and it was a fantastic day. These successes filter down to our other teams and we have increased the number of teams we enter into the leagues. Thanks to everyone who takes part and to the match secretaries who organise the players and matches. Thanks also to Tracy Edward for her work with the box leagues which have proved most successful.

Special thanks go to Steel Tennis for their major contribution to the Club resulting in an increase of memberships at all levels! Well done girls! Thanks to all coaching staff for their efforts throughout the year and we look forward to new full time tennis coach Mark Malcolm joining the team in January.

We installed floodlights on outdoor courts 5, 6 and 7 at the beginning of the year and recently resurfaced our mini courts in partnership with the Glasgow Academy which should enable more court time for our youngest players. Many thanks to Alex Kyle for project managing these facilities.

Both our main gym and small gym have been revamped with new flooring and redecoration as well as new equipment, with more to follow once supply issues are resolved. This has been another investment to ensure our gyms are kept up to date as well as safe. Thanks to Bruce, Jacquie and Matt for all their help throughout the year.

We have set up an events committee this year and already we have had 2 successful Quiz Nights and a Family Disco Party. The family night was a great success and we hope to repeat this in February. Thanks to Carolyn Manson (& family) for organising this. We hope to have a ceilidh, charity night, race night and major events next year, all being well. Any suggestions for other events are welcomed! Thanks to Graeme Inglis for running our 100 Club. Please contact reception if you wish to join.

The bar renovations are complete and hopefully we can increase the usage of this facility. Please remember us when planning family events etc as it is a great venue!

During the day we are hoping with our new contactless coffee machine upstairs that you will come and sit down after your sport or meet friends to enjoy the new facility. Tea, coffee (in china cups!) and biscuits will be available.

Thanks to Dave Crorie and his bar staff for their hard work over the year and during this difficult time. The Beer Garden had a makeover with the addition of a gazebo. This has proved a popular area during the summer months and of course during lockdown. Also thanks to the all weather BBQ boys!

Richard Pearson and his team of Spud Inglis and Ike Grant have worked tirelessly in the grounds to keep them looking smart and tidy. An endless job as you know if you have a garden! They also can turn their hand to jobs inside the Clubhouse from building office furniture and gym equipment to putting up pictures, filling potholes to dealing with knotweed and torn windbreaks - nothing is too much trouble so again many thanks!

Our marketing and sponsorship team have again been working hard and thanks especially to Sam Forbes, Audrey Reilly and Gordon Kent for all their time and effort, much appreciated. Again, anyone who wants to take out sponsorship with the Club please contact Gordon Kent or reception.

A special thank you to our financial team of Paul McGettrick and Douglas Cumine for their time and effort in managing the monetary side of the club. Douglas especially is still involved in the day-to-day managing of the accounts. They have both kept the Club on an even keel and try to keep me under control with my spending ideas to improve the Club!! We just can’t do it all at once, however every area this year has been invested in and improved! I really appreciate, as we all should, the amount of work they do.

Last but not least thanks to Aileen, Val and the Reception team. Aileen works extremely hard for the Club and we could not have a better office manager. She does everything with a smile (as does Val!) and nothing is too much trouble or effort. We are lucky to have her at the helm! Thanks to all our staff for their hard work and dedication to the Club.

Looking to the future we are planning to bring Padel Tennis to Newlands in 2022. Planning permission for 2 courts to be situated in front of the Clubhouse have been approved and 3 tenders have been submitted for consideration. Douglas has been working on LTA loans and we have applied for grants. This has been delayed due to building shortages etc but all being well we will have an EGM early next year to approve this development. Padel is an exciting game backed by the LTA and Andy Murray. Thanks to Alan Pearson, (I have to say that!), Douglas Cumine and the padel committee. A special thanks to the late Stuart McCaffer who was involved in this project from the start.

Anyone interested in joining our team of volunteers please contact reception. If you can spare a little time to help in any area of the Club it will be much appreciated. It can be at a committee level or just now and then - we are always open to offers!

Thanks also to the management committee for their input and support which enabled us to make so many changes throughout the Club.

We will be issuing any new guidelines which affect the Club after the recent government announcement as soon as we get confirmation from the relevant sporting bodies.

Wishing you all a safe and healthy Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Onwards and upwards for Newlands in 2022!

Kind Regards,

Shirley
