Club Champs Final Day 2025 Report

Thanks very much to Thomas McCaffrey for reporting on our club champs finals day. A great day was had by all!

The courts have been brushed, the scoreboards have been reset, the barbecue extinguished, and the club championship trophies are sitting in pride of place in the Newlands LTC Club Championships 2025 winners’ homes.

The first Club Champs Finals Day at Newlands, since the artificial clay courts were opened, promised a lot. High expectations can often lead to disappointment, but the 2025 edition was a day to remember.

Let’s take a look back at some of the stories of the day:

3 of the trophies up for grabs on Saturday, the 25th of October, are now displayed in the McKnight household.

Anna and Calum qualified for 3 finals. Anna, contesting the U18 Girls Singles Final against Emma Barlow and the Women’s Singles Final against Heather Barlow. Calum would partner with his daughter in the Mixed Doubles Final against Jack and Tracy Edward.

Anna got off to a dream start as she won the U18 title 6-1, 6-2. After a short rest, she took to the show court where she would face the number 1 seed, Heather. The match was the first show court match of the day, and it didn’t disappoint as both players battled challenging conditions over 2 extremely close sets, but in the end, McKnight secured her second title of the day, 7-5, 7-6.

In the afternoon, Calum joined Anna on court 2 in the Mixed Doubles Final, and the father-daughter duo fought hard to claim a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Sisters Heather and Emma Barlow partnered up in the Women’s Doubles tournament.

The top seeds had been in great form heading into the day, having only dropped 1 game on their way to the final.

To get over the line, the Barlows would need to beat the pairing of Poppy Bonar and Elizabeth Stevenson.

As expected in doubles, the match was a battle with a number of good rallies and impressive net play from both pairings. In the end, Emma and Heather came out on top, winning 6-2, 6-3.

Speaking after the trophy presentation, Emma said: “It’s nice to win, especially together. It was a good day.”

The last singles match of the day was the Men’s Singles Final between coaches Scott Macaulay and Russell Dickson.

Sometimes matches can take a while to get going, but Scott and Russell came flying out of the blocks.

Scott showed why he was the top seed in the first set as he took a 6-3 lead. What followed was nothing short of magic.

Buoyed on by the first set, Russell fought back to win the second set 7-6 to force the match to a deciding tie-break.

Tennis is a mentally exhausting match, especially when you know your opponent as well as Dickson and Macaulay know each other. Match points for both players came and went, but winning consecutive points proved challenging in increasingly cold and windy conditions.

Scott Macaulay’s roar after winning the match tiebreak 14-12 perfectly summed up a match that was played at the highest of intensities.

Afterwards, Scott said: “[The match was] very physically and mentally challenging. Russell played very well. I’ve played Russell a couple of times now, and that’s definitely the closest that it’s been, and he had match point.”

“It was a good match to come through.”

Russell's Redemption

As the crowd moved into the warmth of the bar to watch through the windows, Russell Dickson stepped back out onto the show court after a short break alongside Leo Watt for the Men’s Doubles Final against first seeds Luke Wilson and Craig Kyle.

Playing in the final match of the day is physically tiring anyway, but when you have already played a marathon match, it is near impossible.

Much like the Women’s Doubles Final earlier on, the men’s doubles was full of excitement, with both pairings showing impressive defensive and offensive plays, generating a buzz of excitement among the crowd.

After a close first set, which went the way of the second seeds, Russell and Leo rallied to win the match 6-3, 6-1.

A tired Russell spoke after the presentation. He said: “I’ve felt better physically, but thankfully, my opponent, Craig, was very generous and gave me an electrolyte before the match.”

Speaking on playing after the singles final, Russell said: “I felt the expectation was a bit reduced for me, and Leo was carrying me through. So yeah, it was good fun.”
