Trees bordering outdoor tennis courts & Friarton Road

The committee have recently completed a risk assessment with regard to the line of Leylandii and Birch trees bordering outdoor tennis courts 1 and 2 with Friarton Road. Over the last few years these trees have grown considerably in height and are also encroaching dangerously onto the road. Having taken professional advice we have decided to work a long term solution that will benefit both members and our neighbours. Friarton Road is heavily used by both school pedestrian traffic and motor vehicles. Newlands Tennis Club would be liable for any future incidents including falling trees or branches.

We obtained several quotes to complete this work and have now signed a deal with a major tree surgeon who will project manage the task. Currently there are 46 trees in total including two separate lines of Leylandii trees and various Birch trees. One line of Leylandii trees nearest Friarton Road will be removed completely. The second row nearest the tennis courts will be reduced in height to just below the floodlight poles. The two dead Birch trees will be removed completely and the remainder will also be reduced in height.

The plan is to remove the dead trees on Monday 6th November with the rest of the work being completed during the school holidays in February. The project will require us to work with the council to close Friarton Road for 3 to 4 days as well as get permission to remove the trees. During this period we would also need to close outdoor courts 1 and 2 and possibly the junior courts while the work is in progress. The project will also require the temporary removal of part the metal fence to allow access.

It goes without saying that we have taken full advice on this matter. No one likes to see healthy trees removed but we recognise that this is the only safe, long term option we have. The remaining line of Leylandii trees will still give us privacy from the road and hopefully they will thicken out once the other row is removed.

Thank you for your support in this matter. Any questions give me a shout (why do I keep thinking of that Monty Python song about a lumberjack)!

Regards,

Richard Pearson (Grounds Convenor)
