Court Lighting Charges

Energy Costs

Our annual energy costs have increased from approx. £30,000 (pre-Covid activity level) to just under £60,000 pa.

We could have taken action earlier but as we were just coming out of COVID we wanted to ease the membership back to sport and felt it was better to delay court lighting charges. We do need to take action to ensure that the club still generates sufficient surplus funds to afford to build the proposed two padel tennis courts and in the medium term resurface the indoor and the outdoor tennis courts.

Therefore, it has been approved by the committee that court bookings as from 1st October 2022, charges for use of lighting will be applied as follows:

Indoor tennis courts - £10 per hour
Outdoor tennis courts - £2 per hour
Squash courts - £1.50 per 45 minutes.

We looked at other facilities and clubs and think this still leaves Newlands competitive when taking into account the facilities on offer. However, this will only contribute approx. £15,000pa of the approx. £30,000pa increase when also including increased charges for indoor court hire by external organisations. The position will be reviewed at the end of March 2023.

We would point out that the club has looked at other potential cost savings:

1. We have fixed price contracts for electricity until January 2024 and for gas until November 2024.
2. The Government support scheme (as currently announced) gives no help to the club as our tariff contracts were fixed prior to 1st April 2022 and are less than the starting point for government support.
3. We are currently researching an upgrade of our court lighting systems to LED. This would be a large capital cost which has a bearing on our short-term future cash flows. As the club is already committed to the padel court development, a decision on the potential court lighting upgrade will be made once cost estimates are received and future cash flows are forecasted.

The new court charges will be administered via the MyCourts booking software. Any queries about how to book and pay for courts, please contact reception.

We regret charging members these additional costs but hope the membership can understand the predicament the club finds itself in and it would be irresponsible to take no action.
