Dear Member,
As 2022 draws to a close and restrictions have been lifted, the club is now back in full operational mode with tennis, squash, racketball, fitness and social all thriving. Membership levels have increased and we are trying to utilise all areas of additional income that we can, bearing in mind the huge increase in our energy bills for the foreseeable future.
Our army of volunteers has swelled and thanks to everyone who lends a hand either on a regular or an ad hoc basis. This is much appreciated and valued, there are too many to mention all individually but thank you!
There have been lots of individual successes in the sporting fields at the club at all age groups which contribute to Newlands retaining it’s reputation and status as a premier club not just in Glasgow but the whole of Scotland. Well done to all our players who represent the club at every level and sport.
Tennis is booming with more teams than ever representing the club. Thanks to all our match secretaries for running their team. The box leagues are more popular than ever and thanks to Tracy Edward for organising and as always thanks to Steel Tennis and our coaching staff for providing high quality coaching and classes for all age groups and abilities. Thanks to Alex Kyle for overseeing the installation of lights on our mini courts to ensure our youngest members get the coaching they require.
A special thanks to Elizabeth and her tennis committee for all their hard work. It’s not easy organising court time for all our league commitments and tournaments but Elizabeth manages to squeeze them all in!
Congratulations to our Ladies and Gents first teams for winning and retaining the Scottish Cup for the third time as well as both winning the premier league, as a result they both jointly won team of the year at the Tennis Scotland awards this year.
We had a variety of levels of successes for all out teams but as they say it’s the taking part that counts!!
Squash and racketball are thriving after the many restrictions they had to endure during the pandemic. Thanks to our coach Matt Bedwell for his hard work introducing more coaching sessions, classes and events for our members young and old!
Our first squash team won the premier league and Matt is the current Scottish National racketball champion. We also have had successes at all ages in competitions.
We are hosting the first ever Scottish Open Racketball Tournament in May as well as hosting the next 3 home matches for Alba Storm in the British Premier squash league.
Thanks to Kieran O'Neill and his committee for all their input in this section.
Our gym and fitness is benefiting from our revamped gyms and equipment as well as using our resurfaced mini courts. Two new trainers have also joined Newlands fitness. Thanks as always to Jacquie Baird and Matt Carrigan for their support and to Bruce Malone for overseeing the gym and fitness section.
We have clubwear available to order from Migo Sports and String Sports will be selling their wares soon - the shelves are ready and waiting in reception!
The social side of the club is now busy with club events and private functions. We have had a Jazz Afternoon, Casino Night, Family Disco and regular Quiz Nights, all of which have been well supported. We have also held a hugely successful MacMillan Coffee Morning, an Easter Egg collection for Glasgow South East Food Bank, a Salvation Army Xmas Present Appeal and a Christmas Appeal for Carnwadric Food Bank - all due to the generosity of our members and the help of a few trusty volunteers. There are lots more events in the pipeline so look out for information regarding future events! Thanks to Marion Sloan, Carolyn Manson, Audrey Reilly, Alistair Weir, Bruce Malone and all their helpers. Thanks also to Graeme Inglis for continuing to run our 200 club.
Tracy Edward is our new bar convenor and thanks to her team (including our Dave Crorie - no-one escapes!) and staff for their hard work. Personally I’m enjoying the new cocktails Tracy had introduced! The faulty chairs have been replaced in the bar and it’s a fab venue for your parties and events.
The marketing and sponsorship committee have been busy again and special thanks to our super salesman Gordon Kent who has managed to sign up several new sponsors but still room for more! This brings in valuable extra income for the club as well as that we have rented out the old west office. Thanks to Sam and Audrey for their help with marketing, website, charity donations and much more.
Richard Pearson and his regular grounds team of Ike Grant, Spud Inglis, George McCann and Eddie Waldron have done an outstanding job in keeping the outside (and sometimes inside) of the club looking pristine. They are out every Tuesday tidying, repairing and just seeing to what needs to be done including the mammoth task of erecting the windbreaks and relaying slabs.
Also thanks to Gordon Kent, Tom Culshaw and Bruce Malone for their work in the clubhouse tackling any maintenance and repairs needed and organising any professional contractors we may need. Also thanks to Ruairidh Maclean for his advice and help with our electrics.
The grounds and clubhouse volunteers have saved the club a considerable amount of money by using their expertise over the years so thanks again.
Padel is waiting for building control to give us the go ahead to start constructing our Padel courts. It is has been a long long process due to Covid, delays from abroad as well as red tape. Thanks to Douglas Cumine for his hard work in securing our grants and loans for Padel. Patience is a virtue which unfortunately my husband, Alan Pearson lacks! However, thanks to him for his perseverance with this development. Hopefully 2023 will be the year for Padel.
One major improvement this year has been the introduction of Cafe Dropshot at the weekends. Ruth and her team provide a fabulous menu and standard of food for members and visitors to enjoy. This has really elevated the offering we can give to members. Ruth has had 2 very successful supper club nights and more are planned as well as providing buffets for club and member events.
The club finances are in safe hands with Douglas Cumine, Paul McGetrick and Colin McIntyre at the helm (all CA’s!). We have ridden out the Covid storm and are now facing the energy storm but due to strong financial controls and diligence from our team we will survive, so many thanks.
Finally I want to thank Aileen Miller, our club manager and Val Henderson, our Reception Manager and their team for the amazing work they do at reception and within the club. Aileen is the club oracle, she has the finger on the pulse and is heartbeat of the club and we are lucky to have her at Newlands.
I wish you all a happy Christmas and best wishes for 2023.
Kind Regards,
Shirley
Thanks also to our partners, The Glasgow Academy, Belhaven Breweries, Arnold Clark, Tankel Diamonds, Corum Property, Venum Wealth, RPJ Energy Solutions, DC Lighting, Sportex, Pulse Radio, SRB Wealth Management and Jones Whyte Solicitors
